The lake is the color of hammered tin when Simon Peter throws himself over the side. He does not wait for the boat to touch bottom. He does not wait for the others — six men still hauling on ropes, still shouting to each other about the weight in the net, a weight so sudden and so total that the linen is groaning at the seams after a whole black night of catching nothing at all. He does not even wait to finish dressing. Peter had stripped down for the work of the nets, as fishermen do, and when the beloved disciple turns from the prow and says the only words that matter — It is the Lord — Peter grabs for his outer coat, cinches it around his waist with hands that are shaking, and goes over the gunwale into the Sea of Galilee before anyone can stop him. He swims it the way a man swims when he is not thinking about swimming at all — half prayer, half thrashing, the cold water closing over a chest that is pounding for reasons that have nothing to do with exertion.
