Before first light, Yin Xi climbs the western watchtower of Hangu Pass, as he has climbed it every clear morning for eleven years, to read the sky. He is not a superstitious man, though his office makes him seem one. Keeper of the pass, guardian of the narrow defile where the Zhou kingdom's western road threads between cliffs of yellow loess, Yin Xi has spent half his life watching two things: the traffic of merchants, envoys, and exiles moving between the settled world and the wilderness beyond it, and the sky above that traffic, which he has studied since boyhood the way other men study the classics. He knows the turning of the Dipper's handle through the seasons. He knows which stars announce drought and which announce flood. He has never yet seen anything in the heavens that did not, eventually, resolve into weather, or war, or the ordinary business of the turning year. This morning is different.
