Naples, the sixth of December, 1273. The feast of Saint Nicholas, patron of the small church built against the Dominican priory, its bells not yet cold in the winter air. Inside, tapers burn low against the stone, and the brothers of the convent of San Domenico stand for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Among them, near the altar, is a big man — heavy through the shoulders, slow in his movements, silent in the way that men are silent who have spent their whole lives listening for something underneath the noise of the world. He is not young. Forty-eight years old, and already the most learned man in Christendom, already called, by those who know what he has done, the greatest mind the Church has yet produced. He has spent the morning, as he has spent nearly every morning for years, saying Mass with the tears of a man half in this world and half in the next — his brothers have long since stopped remarking on it, the way he weeps at the altar, the way the Host in his hands seems sometimes to cost him more than it gives. But this morning is not like the others. Something happens to him at that altar.
