The candle is a stub, and it will not last the hour. Tallow, cheap and smoking, the kind a jailer's wife might spare for a prisoner who has learned, over years, not to ask for much. It sits in its own drippings on a plank shelf, and by its small orange light a man is writing. He writes the way a man writes who has never had enough paper in his life — cramped, economical, every margin used, the letters leaning into each other like men crowded in a doorway. His hands are a tinker's hands. Thick through the knuckle, the nails blunt and stained, a burn scar puckering the back of the left one where solder has bitten him at some village hearth long before this room existed for him. Those hands were made for hammering the bottoms of kettles and clinching the seams of pans, for the small, honest violence of mending what other people had broken. Tonight they are doing something else. Tonight they are drawing a road. The room around him is not large. Stone walls sweating with the damp of the River Ouse, which runs close enough beyond them that on wet nights he can hear it working at its banks. A straw pallet.
