The first pages · A Rented Room in a Hostile City

The stones came first against the roof tiles, a hard patter like sudden hail, and then against the shuttered windows, and a woman near the door flinched and gathered her cloak tighter though the room was warm with bodies and lamp oil. Inside, in a space no larger than a modest dining hall, a thin man stood before an altar that had been, not many months earlier, a table in his cousin's house. He did not stop speaking. He raised his voice only slightly, the way a man raises his voice against wind, not against fear, and he went on unfolding the mystery of the Trinity to a congregation that had gathered at real risk to itself, in the one room in the whole of Constantinople where the Nicene faith could still be preached aloud. This was Gregory, whom the Church would one day call the Theologian, and this was the winter of 379 sliding toward the spring of 380, and the room was called Anastasia. He had named it that himself, Resurrection, because in that room, he believed, the true faith concerning God was rising from a grave the Arian party had dug for it decades deep. Outside its walls lay a capital that had not heard an orthodox bishop preach from an authorized pulpit in forty years.
