The lake had been empty the evening before. This much every boatman in Oddiyana would swear to, for the rest of their lives, to anyone who asked and to many who did not: they had rowed home at dusk across a stretch of open water, blue-black under the first stars, with nothing on it but their own reflected torches. Lake Dhanakosha was a working lake then, ringed with milkweed and heron-grass, known to the kingdom's fishermen the way a man knows the palm of his own hand. There was no island in it. There had never been an island in it. By the time the sun cleared the eastern ridge the next morning, there was. It sat low and bright on the water, a green shoulder of earth that had not been there when the light went out the night before, and it had arrived, as far as anyone could tell, without a sound. No thunder had woken the fishing villages. No tremor had spilled the water jars. The lake simply held, at dawn, a small green world it had not held at dusk, and standing at its center, taller than a man though it could not have been more than a few days grown, was a lotus.
