The house was small, one room really, with a hard-packed dirt floor and a shelf where the water jar stood, and the light that afternoon came low and gold through the door, the way it does in Galilee in early spring when the almond trees have already blossomed and gone green. A girl was inside — perhaps fourteen, perhaps fifteen, no one has ever needed to know her exact age to know everything that mattered about her. She was betrothed, not yet married, still living in her father's house as custom required, doing whatever an ordinary girl in Nazareth did with an ordinary afternoon. And then the room was not ordinary anymore. We are told, in the driest and most astonishing sentence in all of Scripture, that the angel Gabriel was sent from God. Sent — as if this were an errand among a thousand errands, as if heaven dispatched messengers to hill towns in Galilee every week. It does not read like a vision granted to a mystic in ecstasy, and it does not read like a myth reaching for grandeur.
