The pine box was plain. Brother Anthony had built it himself, in the workshop below the monastery, from boards planed smooth but left unstained, the way the brotherhood built everything at the Platina skete — without ornament, because ornament had never been the point. It sat now on trestles in the small church of St. Herman, before the iconostasis Fr. Seraphim had helped to paint, under the low ceiling he had helped to raise, in the mountain silence he had crossed an entire life and an entire continent of longing to find. It was the second of September, 1982. He was forty-eight years old, and he was dead, and the men and women crowded into that little church — some who had driven the long dirt road up from the valley that very morning, some who had been climbing that road toward him for years without knowing it — were about to be given something none of them expected and none of them will ever forget. The chanting had gone on for hours, the way it does at an Orthodox vigil for the dead, one reader giving way to another, the names of the Psalms rising and falling in the dim gold light of beeswax candles.

Questions, answered
What is the free book, and is there a catch?
No catch. The Invitation is a real book, free, and yours to keep: a complete portrait of this life in about 20,000 words, not a sample or a teaser. It is the doorway. The three volumes tell the life in its fullness, and they are here whenever you wish to go deeper.
How do I read it? Do I need an account?
Enter your email and we send a single sign-in link, and no password to invent. Your library opens in your browser, holding the book, and your reading place is always kept across your devices.
Can I listen as well as read?

Any time, in one click, from your library. You keep everything to the end of the period you have paid for, and we never ask why.
