The fire had not yet reached her when she asked for a cross. It was the morning of May the thirtieth, 1431, in the Old Market Square of Rouen, and the crowd was thick enough that some had climbed onto window ledges and rooftops to see. A tall plaster pillar rose from a mound of stone, built high on purpose, so that the flames beneath it would not reach her too quickly, and so that everyone in that square — English soldiers, French townsfolk, clergy in their black and white, the curious and the grieving alike — would have a clear view of what was about to happen to the girl chained at its top. A paper mitre had been set on her shaved head. On it, and on a placard nearby, someone had written the words the court at Rouen had settled on her: heretic, relapse, apostate, idolater. She was nineteen years old. She had asked, before they lit the wood, for a cross. An English soldier standing near the pillar — a common man-at-arms whose name history did not think to keep — took two sticks, bound them together, and passed them up to her. She took that rough little cross and pressed it against her breast, inside her robe, over her heart. It was not enough.
