The morning session of the Parliament of the World's Religions had already run long, and the man in the ochre robe had not meant to speak at all that day. He had been sitting through it since the opening processional, one figure among hundreds on the platform of the Hall of Columbus at the Art Institute of Chicago, watching bishops and rabbis and Buddhist priests and Confucian scholars rise one after another to read prepared remarks to seven thousand people packed into a hall built for far fewer.
