The first pages · The Question That Opens Everything

The sand still held the day's heat when the two young men lowered themselves to the floor of the old man's cell. It was past compline, though at Scete no bell marked the hour; a monk knew it was time to pray by the deepening of the dark and by the particular quality of silence that settled over the desert once the last color drained from the west. Inside the cell there was no lamp. There rarely was, in these dwellings scattered like grain across the wadi. A man did not need to see his own hands to weep over his sins. Abba Moses let them kneel a long while before he spoke. He was a big man, broad through the shoulders in a way that no fifteen years of bread and salt had managed to whittle down, and his voice, when it finally came, was quiet enough that both visitors had to still their breathing to catch it. "Tell me," he said, "why have you come." It was not an idle question, and both young men knew it. They had crossed a sea to reach Egypt.
