The Pilgrim's Wound

The wall at Pamplona was never meant to hold. By the morning of May 20, 1521, every officer inside the citadel knew it — the ramparts were old, the garrison too small, the French guns arrayed on the hills above the city too many and too well served. The town council had already sent word that Pamplona itself would open its gates without a fight. The only question left was whether the fortress would do the same. One man on that wall thought surrender was worse than death. He was thirty years old, dark-haired, vain about his appearance even in a soldier's mail, and utterly, almost comically certain that honor mattered more than arithmetic. His name was Íñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola, and he had spent his whole adult life rehearsing, without quite knowing it, for this single reckless stand. He argued the garrison commander out of capitulation. He argued the terrified soldiers into one more hour of resistance. He believed, the way only a man formed on stories of knight-errantry could believe, that a wall worth dying on was better than a gate worth opening. The French guns began their work at midday. Stone dust filled the air. Then, sometime in the early afternoon, a cannonball came through the breach and passed between Íñigo's legs.
