The rain had stopped an hour before, and the forest floor still ticked with water falling from leaf to leaf, the only sound in a night otherwise sealed shut with silence. Somewhere close, a barking deer called once and did not call again. The young monk sat with his legs folded beneath him on a thin cotton mat laid over bare earth, his umbrella-tent — the klot — pitched between two trees, its netting hanging open on one side because the night had turned too warm to close it. He had chosen this spot at dusk the way he chose every spot on the wandering path: not for comfort, but because something in it asked to be sat with. He did not yet know what. He found out sometime after midnight, when the moon had gone behind cloud and the dark inside the forest became a dark with weight to it, the kind you could feel against your skin. A king cobra had come out from beneath the roots of the tree he leaned against, unhurried, its body passing so close to his robe that he felt the disturbance of air before he understood what had caused it. It did not strike. It did not retreat.
