Snow had been falling since morning, fine and dry, the kind that squeaks underfoot rather than sinks, and by the time the two men found the fallen tree in the forest clearing, the whole world was white and hushed. It was late November, 1831, four years before the end would come. Nicholas Motovilov, a young landowner from Simbirsk province, sat down beside the old monk on the trunk of a felled pine, glad to rest his legs, glad most of all simply to be near him. He had come to Sarov half broken in body — his joints had failed him years before, and doctors in two capitals had told him nothing could be done — and it was this same monk, Father Seraphim, who had prayed over him and set him walking again. Motovilov owed him his legs. He did not yet know he was about to be given something larger. They had been talking, as they often did, of the things that mattered most: prayer, fasting, vigil, almsgiving, the whole architecture of a Christian life. Motovilov pressed a question he could not let go of. Everyone agreed these disciplines were good. But what were they *for*?

Questions, answered
What is the free book, and is there a catch?
No catch. The Invitation is a real book, free, and yours to keep: a complete portrait of this life in about 20,000 words, not a sample or a teaser. It is the doorway. The three volumes tell the life in its fullness, and they are here whenever you wish to go deeper.
How do I read it? Do I need an account?
Enter your email and we send a single sign-in link, and no password to invent. Your library opens in your browser, holding the book, and your reading place is always kept across your devices.
