The first pages · The Hand on the Head of God

The river is cold in March, colder than a man expects who has walked all night to reach it. The Jordan here is narrow enough to wade, brown with the silt of the Judean hills, moving without hurry between banks thick with tamarisk and reed. Crowds have come down from Jericho and up from the villages of the wilderness to stand in that water, and the man waiting for them wears a garment of camel's hair cinched with a strip of leather, his hair and beard uncut, his skin the color of old rope from years of sun. He has been putting people under this water for months now, one after another — tax collectors and soldiers and Pharisees who came out to see what all the talk was about, farmers, fishermen, women with children on their hips — all of them confessing, all of them going down into the current and coming up changed, or hoping to be. He knows this work. His hands know it. They have learned the exact pressure needed to bring a grown man under without frightening him, the exact moment to let him rise gasping into the light. And then his cousin walks into the water. There is no thunder yet. No voice.

Questions, answered

What is the free book, and is there a catch?

No catch. The Invitation is a real book, free, and yours to keep: a complete portrait of this life in about 20,000 words, not a sample or a teaser. It is the doorway. The three volumes tell the life in its fullness, and they are here whenever you wish to go deeper.

How do I read it? Do I need an account?

Enter your email and we send a single sign-in link, and no password to invent. Your library opens in your browser, holding the book, and your reading place is always kept across your devices.

Can I listen as well as read?

Yes. Every life is available in both ebook and audiobook, read and listened to natively in your library. The free Invitation includes its narration too.

What does it cost?

The free Invitation costs nothing, and always will. Own any title for $8 — ebook and audiobook together — or a Complete Life for $20. The Library Card — $369, once, yours for life — opens every life in the house, every volume and every audiobook, and each new life joins the day it is finished. Every life, every volume, every voice - and every one still to come. One payment, yours for life.

Can I cancel?

Any time, in one click, from your library. You keep everything to the end of the period you have paid for, and we never ask why.

What if I would rather own a copy?

Every life is sold in print and ebook through the ordinary bookshops: Ingram, Google Play, Apple Books, Kobo. The membership is how to read the whole house; the shops are how to keep one life on your shelf forever.
