The bell for Vigils had not yet rung. Below the tower at Monte Cassino, the brothers lay asleep in the dormitory, worn from the day's labor, and the mountain itself seemed to be holding its breath. It was somewhere in the last years of Benedict's life, past midnight, the hour when the old monk kept his private watch at the window before the community rose to sing the praises of God in the dark. He had done this for years — risen alone, before the bell, to pray while the world around him slept. On this night, everything changed. A light broke over him. Not the gray coming-on of dawn, not torchlight, not anything the tower had seen before. Gregory of Rome, who wrote Benedict's life within a generation of his death and preserved the memory of the monks who had known him, tells us the light banished the very dark of night and shone with a splendor greater than the sun at noon.
