Picture the sky over Nabadwip that night. No moon worth mentioning — the almanacs don't record one — because the town had stopped needing the moon. It was making its own light: hundreds of clay lamps and torches bobbing down every lane that ran toward the river, and beneath them a wall of human bodies, close-packed, swaying, weeping, singing so loudly that dogs in far villages across the Ganges lifted their heads. At the center of it, where the light seemed to gather rather than merely fall, walked a young man with skin the color of molten gold, his arms thrown open to the sky, tears running freely down a face that showed no shame in them at all. This was Nimai Pandit. Later the world would call him Mahaprabhu — the Great Lord — and later still, simply Gauranga, the Golden One, the name his own neighbors had given him as a boy without knowing what they were naming. But on this night he was still just the brilliant young scholar of Nabadwip, barefoot in the dust of his own hometown, leading a river of devotees toward the house of a man everyone else in that town had spent the last several days being afraid of.
