The light has not yet decided what color it will be. It is that hour before dawn when Jerusalem holds its breath, when the birds have started but not yet committed, when the air still carries the chill of a spring night in Judea. Mary of Magdala is on her knees in a garden outside the city wall, and she is weeping so hard that she cannot see straight. She has already come once this morning, while it was still properly dark, and found the stone rolled back from the mouth of the tomb. She ran from that first sight — ran to tell Peter and the one Jesus loved, ran with her heart slamming against her ribs, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. The two men ran back with her, outran her even, stooped and looked and saw the linen wrappings lying there, saw the cloth that had been on his head rolled up in a place by itself. And then — this is the detail that always stops me, every time I read it — they went home. They went back to the room where they were staying. What else was there to do? The body was gone.
