The valley between Tara and Slane lies dark that night, and it is meant to. Every fire in the kingdom of Meath has been put out. Every hearth from the great houses of the nobles to the smallest cabin of a herdsman stands cold, and will stay cold, by the word of the High King himself. It is the eve of the spring festival, the old feast the druids keep at Tara, and the law for that night has not changed in living memory: no flame may be kindled anywhere in Ireland until the king's own fire blazes first upon the royal hill. To break that law is to invite death. The druids have told Lóegaire mac Néill as much, and Lóegaire, High King of Ireland, seated among his nobles and his poets and his priests on the ancient seat of his fathers, believes them. Across the valley, on the hill of Slane, a small company of foreigners keeps a fire of their own.
