The wood catches slow, then all at once, and the small stone room fills with a light that has no need of lamps. Baba sits before the dhuni as he sits every evening of his life in Shirdi, cross-legged, his kafni gathered close, feeding the fire with his own hands — a length of babul branch, a fistful of dry stalks, whatever has come to him that day as offering. Sparks climb toward the blackened beams of the mosque he has named Dwarkamai, after the city Krishna once ruled, and for a moment the whole threshold glows orange, and every face crowded into that doorway glows with it too. They have been arriving since the sun tipped low over the fields — Hindus and Muslims both, farmers still smelling of the day's ploughing, a mother with a sick child wrapped against her hip, an old man from Kopergaon who walked the whole way because his knees no longer trust a bullock cart. They leave their sandals in the dust outside. No one tells them to. It is simply understood, the way it is understood that this floor, though it belongs to no temple and bears the mark of no single faith stamped clean upon it, is holy ground.
